    Hi all,

Since we started our work at the border an hour North of our Greek office, we have been able to help many children who have fled the war that is destroying their country. Although we don't yet work in these conflict zones, we do want to share with you another form in which people, and in this case children are victims of human trafficking. Over the last two decades, we see more children around the world fall victim to adults who force them to become a child soldier. The internationally agreed definition for a child soldier is any person below 18 years of age who is, or who has been, recruited or used by an armed force or armed group in any capacity, including but not limited to children, boys and girls, used as fighters, cooks, porters, messengers, spies or for sexual purposes. It does not only refer to a child who is taking or has taken a direct part in hostilities.
(Paris Principles and Guidelines on Children Associated with Armed Forces or Armed Groups, 2007.)

Children as young as 10 years old are being "recruited" to commit unthinkable acts against or for other human beings. Consequently this also poses an ethical dilemma when it comes to deciding when a child can be held responsible for their acts and when they are considered a victim themselves. Both girls and boys are used in armed conflict and play a wide variety of roles.

These can involve frontline duties including as fighters but they may also be used in other roles such as porters, couriers, spies, guards, suicide bombers or human shields, or to perform domestic duties such as cooking and cleaning. Girls and boys may also be used for sexual purposes by armed forces or groups.*

As we are constantly taking new ground when it comes to fighting trafficking and our world is becoming increasingly torn up by wars, our team around the world has taken it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of refugees of which many are children. Had these children not been able to flee their country, the reality would have been that they might have become the victim of this form of slavery. Our Prevention and Awareness programs educate possible vulnerable groups of children about these dangers, but also create awareness amongst those who are able to practically make a difference in the lives of the child soldiers. We believe that education leads to prevention. Realize that as you are sharing what you've learned about human trafficking with the people who support you for your Muskathlon, we together are working to rescue, restore and rebuild lives.

It is because of your support, that we have been able to help the thousands of men, women and children, just like the little boy in the photo, to continue on their journey to safety and with your help, we will continue to do so.

    For Freedom,

    Team A21
